The afternoon of pomp and circumstance received a dose of humor from commencement speaker Bernie Hunhoff. The 1974 MMC graduate has built a journalism and writing career which includes founding South Dakota Magazine. In addition, Hunhoff has served in the Legislature during the past quarter-century. The Democrat served as state senator from 1992-98, as state representative and House Minority Leader from 2009-2014 and now as the newly-elected state senator from District 18 (Yankton County). Hunhoff talked about the special people who guided him while attending MMC. In turn, he shared anecdotes that had been told to him by this year’s seniors about their own MMC experiences. Hunhoff called MMC "a special place" and urged the graduates to never quit but also to take the time to enjoy life. At South Dakota Magazine, we tell stories," he told the graduates. "You’re all originals, all one of a kind. Now, it’s time for you to go on with your lives and make your own stories."Read it here.
Hunhoff believes much more work needs to be done on funding education in South Dakota and that South Dakota should institute a corporate income tax in order to raise funds for education.
Sen. Hunhoff said that the visit from President Obama missed some opportunities in South Dakota.
