State lawmakers voted to abolish the death penalty in Nebraska on Wednesday, setting up a veto showdown with Gov. Pete Ricketts that is expected to draw national attention. The 32-15 vote to pass LB268 was the culmination of decades of work by Omaha Sen. Ernie Chambers and other opponents of the death penalty inside and outside the Nebraska Legislature. [Lincoln Journal-Star]Nebraska's GOP governor has already ordered the 'cocktail' the state would use to put down those convicted of capital crimes while the American Civil Liberties Union investigates both the poisons and the procurement process.
WBUR's Here and Now aired a segment describing how states like South Dakota where capital punishment hasn't been abolished gifts like tickets to sporting events are traded for the drugs used in lethal injections.
Several botched executions have exposed states to the barbaric process of killing another in retribution.
In other news from Nebraska's unicameral legislature the final version of Nebraska's LB643, otherwise known as the Medical Cannabis Act, is headed for a second round of debate.
