The Missouri River Recovery Implementation Committee (MRRIC) will hold its 29th meeting, May 19-21, in Sioux Falls, SD. Public attendance is encouraged, and an opportunity is provided during each daily session for the public to address the Committee and the lead agencies, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), regarding the Missouri River Recovery Program ( MRRP). At this meeting, MRRIC will learn more about recent progress on the Missouri River Recovery Management Plan, including model results for management actions that meet species objectives for least terns and piping plovers, and science and governance components of the Adaptive Management Plan. Today on 100 Eyes, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader media experiment hosted a rousing discussion of efforts to slow some sources of non-point pollution in the Big Sioux River watershed and announced the formation of a new environmental group created to raise awareness about the river's plight.
In 2012, after another GOP governor gutted environmental protection in South Dakota, the Big Sioux River was named the thirteenth most polluted river in the US and nearly every waterway in the state suffers impairment.
