Katie Fire Thunder is a 25-year-old Oglala Lakota activist who was recently appointed to the Montana House of Representatives for District 59. Fire Thunder is a legal assistant at the Gallatin County Attorney’s Office and co-founder of Bozeman Tenants United, a nonprofit fighting for safe and affordable housing. She served as a legislative aide and was a member of the Kamala Harris presidential campaign. Her grandmother, Cecelia Fire Thunder, served as the first female president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe from 2004 until her impeachment in 2006 purportedly for announcing plans sans council approval to open a clinic that would provide abortions on the reservation.
