In South Dakota, in 2015, just over nine percent of people were diagnosed with type two diabetes, with another thirty five percent in the pre-diabetes category. Avera Health Chief Medical Officer Dr Tad Jacobs says those rates have been rising. The states obesity rate is now just under thirty percent, up from eighteen percent in 2000.
