On 5 August, 2026, New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez filed a lawsuit against the Trump Organization's Department of Justice (DOJ) and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
New Mexico accuses the federal government of stonewalling, obstruction and claims the DOJ has blocked access to completely unredacted evidentiary files necessary to advance a state-level criminal investigation into sex trafficking at Zorro Ranch. While the federal government released millions of pages under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, many documents remain heavily redacted. Public versions mention Zorro Ranch over 13,000 times and New Mexico authorities are seeking raw law-enforcement data to trace potential co-conspirators, traffickers, and witnesses who visited the property.
Jeffrey Epstein initially purchased the Zorro Ranch property in 1993 from Democratic New Mexico Governor, Bruce King. However, the construction of his 26,700-square-foot mansion and the broader development of the compound took place largely while Republican Gary Johnson was serving as governor.
Two days before Donald Trump's attempted takeover of the United States in 2021 John Eastman was summoned to the Oval Office to share some exotic extralegal scenarios then in 2022 as he left a Santa Fe restaurant he was frisked by federal agents who seized his iPhone Pro 12 presumed to contain incriminating evidence of Trump's attempted autogolpe. Eastman owns a property at 180 Valley Drive in Santa Fe.
After signaling a campaign promise to open the files transparently, the Trump administration faced heavy bipartisan pressure before completing the mass document dump, which the state of New Mexico now argues was unacceptably censored. Frustrated by federal inaction, New Mexico launched its own bipartisan Truth Commission and executed a state-led physical search of the property in March 2026. The commission released an interim report on the estate's activities in August 2026.
The interim report explicitly detailed how federal and state law enforcement agencies failed to aggressively investigate Epstein's local footprint. Federal authorities notably failed to search the ranch or prioritize New Mexican victims during Epstein's lifetime. Furthermore, state investigators regularly shared files with federal agencies but received no updates or copies back. A final report summarizing the full scope of the state's physical and digital investigation is scheduled for release by the end of December 2026.
Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday to post a map of the state, crossing out the word “Mexico” and instead labeling it “New America.” It was one in a bizarre string of posts from the president, including many images that appeared to be generated by artificial intelligence or otherwise doctored.
