Born in Minot, North Dakota Johnson also suffered through several Aberdeen, South Dakota winters as a kid. Both having fled the Republican Party Johnson and his running mate former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld, campaigned in South Dakota during the tainted, likely illegitimate 2016 election. Weld talked in Spearditch as part of his whirlwind tour and Gov. Johnson did very well in Lawrence County and 7.9% was the best in the whole state.
As recently as 2023 Johnson said he'd support Bobby Kennedy, Jr. if he ran as a Libertarian but this year he voted for Chase Oliver, the Libertarian nominee.
"Half of what Trump does is good, the other half is crazy. Sure, I've got concerns just like everybody else does. He's gonna get elected, he's gonna be in office. He's that same [age.] I mean, here it is—this is what we're talking about, and there are legitimate concerns. I didn't vote for him. I think Trump has alienated a lot of Republicans, I'm one of them. Having been governor for two terms, what I recognize is, [when] you're the party nominee, you control the party." [Who's Gary Johnson Voting For?]
