“Earth science relates directly to everything we are doing in space exploration”

Senator Bill Nelson (D–FL), the top Democrat on the full commerce committee and the only current member of Congress to have flown in space, took a more gentlemanly tack. “Let me point out that budgets are not always as clear as what we think they are,” he said, noting that several other NASA accounts also support exploration activities. At the same time, he rejected Cruz’s attack on the discipline. “Earth science relates directly to everything we are doing in space exploration,” Nelson asserted. “And I would draw that distinction for folks who think that it’s not fashionable, that NASA doesn’t need to do earth sciences.” [Science Insider]

  1. I'm in agreement that NASA's mission deals with the study of Earth knowing that what we have on this planet is so rare and we will not have the technology for a long time to discover and settle on another habitable planet if we destroy this one.

Sometimes I wonder if those that have the most influence in destructive public policy via war or environmental damage should be flown to the desolate moon and then spend time at the International Space Station to view what is happening to this precious little blue ball in space. Would it change their minds and change policy especially passing what their impression was down generations?

Our oceans are becoming more acidic and when will the tipping point be? A total collapse in the oceanic food chain? All this data helps NASA communicate with the public and policy makers and compares it to the hostile chemistry that exists on other planets in our Solar System.

Larry may I suggest that you have a direct blogger contact link that is on other blogs that could help enhance the blog?

On a side note I can think of a few commenters from DWC and a elected officials that could help inspire future generations by becoming the first residents on Mars being a one way trip with unfortunately no ability to communicate with Earth once on Mars but NASA could let us know of their well being. Do you have a few suggestions?
