Cheyenne River tribal member, Erin Shanley has been sworn in as Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.Tanya Lee writes in Indian Country Today:
Tupper writes in the Mitchell Daily Republic:
Her appointment by U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson came as a result of a 2012 Memorandum of Understanding between the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the U.S. Attorneys' Offices for the District of South Dakota and the District of North Dakota. The Mitchell Republic is hardly a bastion of progressive thought; yet, editor Seth Tupper is often a guest on Dakota Midday's political junkie segment. I wince, cringe, even clinch to constipation whenever publisher Jon Hunter of the Madison Daily Leader appears as a guest on that program.
Tupper writes in the Mitchell Daily Republic:
If Brendan Johnson runs, he can probably count on a similar level of support from Indian Country. He also brings the credibility of the office of U.S. attorney, a clean slate from having never run for or held elective office, and powerful name recognition and a positive association with one of the state’s all-time most successful and respected politicians, his father. Brendan Johnson also appears to have that something extra — an aura, if you will — that great politicians tend to have. I witnessed that firsthand several years ago when, after he left a visit with me in my office, a pair of young women in the newsroom converged on me quickly and demanded to know the identity of the handsome, sharply dressed young man who had just glided in and out of their sight.
